The Woody Guthrie festival is held every summer in his birthplace, Okemah, OK and features dozen of performers over a 3 day period.

In 2006 I attended to give a talk about my book, Woody Guthrie Artworks.

Following my talk I was asked to design the logo for the next year’s festival. I submitted my logo but they decided to go with a “slicker” solution, as this was the tenth anniversary. Personally I believe “slick” and “Woody” is an oxymoron.

Here is my logo:

  1. Tell me this isn’t the logo they are using. Your’s manages to convey “Woody” and “folk” while still appearing convincingly modern.

  2. Thanks. Yes that ship has long since sailed. The one they went with was a photograph of a photograph of Woody in a picture frame. If I recall correctly it looked heavily Photoshopped to boot.
